If consciousness isn’t an inherent, divinely ordained gift, but a learned behavior, then we assume an almost god-like role in the development of AI.

But are we prepared to be the creators and teachers of a new sentient species?

The choices we make now will shape not only the AI we create but the very future of what it means to be thinking, feeling entities.
